Crédit Agricole Expands in Germany with New Digital Bank and IKB Acquisition

French banking group Crédit Agricole is strengthening its presence in Germany through the launch of a new digital-focused universal bank and an agreement to acquire IKB Deutsche Industriebank from US private equity firm Lone Star Funds, marking a significant step in its European expansion strategy.

The new institution, Crédit Agricole Deutschland, is scheduled to begin operations at the end of October 2026, building on the existing business of its German subsidiary Creditplus. The bank will initially bring together approximately 600 employees and 20 branches, combining digital banking services with access to personal customer support.

Amir Djourabtchi, who has served as CEO of Creditplus since 2022, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Crédit Agricole Deutschland. Under his leadership, the bank will initially focus on everyday banking and savings products before gradually expanding its financial services offering.

Customers will have access to current accounts with German IBANs, Visa payment cards, a mobile banking application, and savings products, including instant-access and fixed-term deposits. From 2027, the institution plans to introduce additional financing, investment, and advisory services, targeting customers seeking more comprehensive banking solutions.

The expansion supports Crédit Agricole's ACT 2028 strategic plan, which includes an ambition to attract €30 billion in deposits from German customers. The group currently serves approximately one million retail customers across its German operations and aims to double that number by the end of 2028.

Alongside the digital bank launch, Crédit Agricole has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of IKB Deutsche Industriebank, a German lender specialising in financing small and medium-sized enterprises and larger corporate clients. Founded in 1924, IKB holds approximately €14.3 billion in total assets and maintains a loan portfolio of €8.2 billion.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen Crédit Agricole's position in Germany's corporate lending market by combining IKB's established customer relationships and sector expertise with the French group's broader financial services capabilities, including investment banking, asset management, and international financing.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of the second quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions. Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

Together, the two initiatives represent a broader effort by Crédit Agricole to establish a stronger position in Europe's largest economy, expand its customer base, and build a more integrated banking platform serving both individual and corporate clients.
