BMO Financial Group has announced the appointment of Tim Cox as US Country Head and Chief Executive Officer of its American subsidiaries, BMO Financial Corp. and BMO Bank N.A., as the Canadian banking group prepares for a leadership transition in its US operations.
Cox will officially assume the position on November 1, 2026, succeeding Darrel Hackett, who is stepping down from his executive leadership responsibilities after more than 22 years with the organization.
Hackett will transition to the position of Executive Vice-Chair and Senior Advisor, supporting BMO's leadership and business activities during the transition.
In his new role, Cox will report directly to Darryl White, Chief Executive Officer of BMO Financial Group. He will also join the bank's Executive Committee and serve as Chairman of the US Management Committee.
Cox has been with BMO since 2010, holding several senior positions involving legal affairs, regulatory compliance and corporate governance.
His previous responsibilities include serving as Global Chief Regulatory Officer and, since 2022, US General Counsel, where he contributed to the bank's legal and regulatory activities across its American business.
The appointment brings an executive with extensive institutional knowledge and regulatory experience into one of BMO's most important regional leadership positions.
BMO operates a substantial banking network across North America, providing personal banking, commercial lending, wealth management and capital markets services.
The leadership transition comes as financial institutions continue managing regulatory developments, technological investment and competition across the US banking sector.
According to BMO, Cox's understanding of the organization and its regulatory environment will support the continued development of its American operations.
The appointment reflects the bank's focus on leadership continuity, risk management and long-term business growth as it continues expanding its financial services activities in the United States.
