Amazon's cloud unit is considering AMD's new AI chips

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the leading provider of cloud computing services, is reportedly considering using new artificial intelligence (AI) chips from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), according to an AWS executive. Though no final decision has been made, the executive made the remarks during an AMD event where the chip company discussed its AI market strategy. AMD revealed some technical specifications for an upcoming AI chip, which could outperform Nvidia's current offerings on some metrics, but the news of a flagship customer for the chip was not disclosed, causing AMD's shares to fall.

In interviews with Reuters, AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su explained the company's approach to winning over major cloud computing customers by offering a range of system components for services like ChatGPT, allowing customers to choose which elements they want to use. AWS Vice President of Elastic Compute Cloud, Dave Brown, confirmed that AWS is considering using AMD's new MI300 chips in its cloud services, but no public commitments have been made.

Brown also revealed that AWS declined to work with Nvidia on its DGX Cloud offering, which involves cloud providers offering an entire system designed by Nvidia. Instead, AWS prefers to design its own servers, using components of its choosing, including Nvidia's H100 chip, which was incorporated into AWS's own system design in March.
