Denmark to invest $8.5 billion in defense, including F-35 jets and Arctic

Denmark announced a $8.5 billion investment in defense capabilities, with a focus on strengthening its presence in Greenland and purchasing 16 new F-35 fighter jets.

The plan, revealed Friday evening, includes two new Arctic patrol vessels, a maritime patrol aircraft, a North Atlantic undersea cable, new drones, and the construction of a Joint Arctic Command headquarters in Nuuk. Denmark will also establish a military unit in Greenland, according to the defense ministry.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the need for a greater presence in Greenland "to ensure sovereignty enforcement," with plans for more exercises and improved surveillance capabilities.

The significant defense investment reflects Denmark’s growing focus on Arctic security and military modernization.
