BP Appoints Shell Executive Emma Lewis to Lead Global Downstream Business

British energy giant BP has announced the appointment of Emma Lewis, a senior executive from rival Shell, as Executive Vice President of its Downstream business, marking a significant leadership move as the company continues restructuring its global operations to strengthen performance, improve efficiency, and deliver greater shareholder value.

The appointment, announced on November 4, 2026, forms part of BP's broader organizational transformation under Chief Executive Officer Meg O'Neill, who is working to simplify the company's operating structure and reinforce its position across the international energy industry.

Lewis will officially join BP on January 4, 2027, becoming a member of the company's leadership team and assuming responsibility for one of its two principal business divisions.

The Downstream segment brings together BP's refining operations, terminals and pipelines, mobility and convenience businesses, aviation fuels, and bioenergy activities. It represents a central component of the company's integrated energy operations, connecting fuel production, transportation, distribution, and commercial sales across international markets.

Lewis brings more than 25 years of leadership experience across the energy and chemicals industries, having held senior operational, commercial, and strategic positions at Shell and ExxonMobil.

Most recently, she served as Executive Vice President of Chemicals at Shell, overseeing the company's global chemicals business, including manufacturing operations, commercial activities, polymers interests, and international joint ventures.

During her tenure at Shell, Lewis played an important role in managing major industrial operations and supporting organizational transformation across the company's chemicals portfolio.

Before joining Shell in 2012, she spent approximately 13 years at ExxonMobil, where she held positions involving manufacturing, supply-chain management, commercial operations, and product development.

Her experience includes managing manufacturing operations in Texas, overseeing chemicals supply and logistics across the Americas, and leading commercial activities within the global polymers industry.

Her international career spans Europe, Asia, and North America, providing extensive experience in managing complex industrial businesses and navigating changing global energy market conditions.

BP Chief Executive Meg O'Neill welcomed the appointment, emphasizing Lewis's operational and commercial expertise and her experience leading large international businesses through periods of transformation.

The appointment comes as BP implements a major restructuring of its operations, reorganizing its business around two principal segments: Upstream and Downstream.

The revised operating model is intended to simplify management responsibilities, reduce organizational complexity, accelerate decision-making, and improve accountability across the company's global activities.

Under the new structure, the Upstream division focuses on oil and gas exploration, development, and production, while Downstream consolidates refining, fuel distribution, and customer-facing energy businesses.

The restructuring became operationally effective in July 2026, with the new reporting structure scheduled to take effect in January 2027.

Richard Harding, who has served as interim Executive Vice President of Downstream for the past seven months, will remain in the position until Lewis officially assumes her responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Lewis's departure from Shell comes during a period of strategic changes at the company, which has been evaluating potential sales of chemicals assets as part of efforts to improve portfolio performance and strengthen financial returns.

Shell Chief Executive Wael Sawan has previously indicated that while the company's chemicals assets remain valuable, they may not represent the most suitable long-term strategic fit within its broader business portfolio.

For BP, bringing in an experienced industry executive from a major international competitor reflects its focus on strengthening leadership capabilities within businesses that play a crucial role in overall financial and operational performance.

The appointment also highlights the importance of experienced management as global energy companies face evolving market conditions, increasing competition, operational challenges, and pressure to maintain profitability while adapting their long-term strategies.

As BP continues implementing its organizational transformation, Lewis's appointment establishes permanent leadership for its Downstream division and represents another step toward building a more integrated, efficient, and competitive global energy business.

Her extensive industry experience is expected to support BP's efforts to strengthen operational reliability, enhance commercial performance, and deliver sustainable long-term value across its international operations.
