Equinor Discovers Up to 50 Million Barrels of Oil Equivalent in North Sea

Norwegian energy company Equinor and its partners Petoro and TotalEnergies have announced a new oil and gas discovery in the North Sea, with preliminary estimates indicating recoverable resources of between 19 million and 50 million barrels of oil equivalent.

The discovery, named Grimsnes, is located near the Oseberg field, approximately 145 kilometres west of Bergen, Norway, close to the existing Oseberg South and Tune fields.

Equinor, which operates the discovery, plans to accelerate development by connecting the newly identified resources to existing subsea infrastructure and processing production through the Oseberg South platform.

The approach could allow the companies to bring the discovery into production more quickly while limiting the investment required to construct entirely new offshore facilities.

Frode Skarstein, Senior Vice President at Equinor, confirmed that the company intends to pursue a rapid connection to existing infrastructure to support efficient production from the newly discovered resources.

Equinor and its partners are targeting an investment decision as early as summer 2027, with the possibility of beginning production within approximately three years.

The discovery is part of a broader strategy among Norwegian energy companies to extend the operational lives of mature North Sea fields by identifying additional resources near established production facilities.

Developing discoveries close to existing infrastructure can improve project economics, particularly where smaller oil and gas deposits might otherwise be too expensive to develop independently.

The Grimsnes discovery highlights the continued importance of exploration activity in the Norwegian continental shelf as energy companies work to maintain regional output and support European oil and gas supplies.

Although the find could contribute additional production in the future, final recoverable volumes and development plans remain subject to further technical assessment and investment decisions.
