HSBC Launches RedCoin Stablecoin in Major Expansion of Digital Payment Services

HSBC has expanded its digital finance strategy with the launch of RedCoin, a Hong Kong dollar-denominated stablecoin designed to bring blockchain-based payment services to millions of consumers.

The launch, announced on October 23, 2026, introduces the bank's first stablecoin through its PayMe application, with more than 3.3 million users expected to gain access to the service during the rollout.

Licensed and regulated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, HSBC RedCoin aims to combine the efficiency of digital asset transactions with the regulatory and security infrastructure of an established financial institution.

The stablecoin will initially support peer-to-peer transfers and payments at more than 100,000 merchants connected to PayMe.

HSBC also plans to expand the service into tokenized investment products and additional corporate and institutional financial applications.

The initiative forms part of the bank's broader investment in digital asset infrastructure, alongside its existing tokenized deposit services, digital bond issuance technology and blockchain-based gold products.

For the wider financial services industry, the launch represents another example of traditional banking institutions integrating stablecoins into established payment networks.

By introducing blockchain-based transactions through a widely used financial application, HSBC is positioning regulated digital currencies as a potential component of mainstream consumer and institutional financial services.
